Netball

Netball at The Leys has grown from strength to strength over the past few years, and it is the major sport for girls in the Lent term. Although the season does not officially start until January, there is pre-season netball training in the Autumn term, as well as County Tournaments which we attend every year.

There are thirteen teams throughout the school, with two U13, four U14, three U15 and four Senior teams, as well as a senior non squad group. Each team is allocated a coach who may be part of teaching staff or a specialist external coach, and they attend three sessions a week, two training session and one weekly fixture which is on a Saturday, against both local schools and schools in surrounding counties.

We have seven netball courts in total, one indoor court in the sports complex, three outdoor courts at the main school site and three additional courts situation at our Latham Road site, which are our second set of 20 acre playing fields. Netball also makes use of the school’s athletic development suite for specialist training and fitness, with some girls participating in the School’s Sports Academy programme.

Local Clubs Links

There are a number of different local clubs that we have links with, depending on the location of where pupils live. A lot of out pupils who play outside of school often also play for Comberton Netball club or CoJags Netball Club, who have both junior teams as well as women’s teams.

Saracen Mavericks Links

Saracens Mavericks Academy currently use The Leys facilities for there training sessions, which enables us to have a close link with them. Although there trials are open to anyone, it allows us to speak with them directly about potential pathway players that will be attending / who to look out for. Trials for this pathway are held every year, dependent on the year group and have two stages of trials, the first stage being open and then the second stage being invite only. We currently have two pupils in the pathway; one in the U14 squad and the other U16 squad.

Netball Tours

In recent years the senior girls have toured in Malta and Belfast. We are currently preparing for our next Junior Tour where we will be travelling to Belfast in February 2023 and a Senior long haul tour in the academic year 2026/27.
