Martin Priestley
Martin Priestley
Head

Mr Priestley joined The Leys as Headmaster in January 2014. Prior to that he was Headmaster of Warminster School in Wiltshire (2006-13) and a teacher and Housemaster at Uppingham School (1994-2006). Before starting his teaching career, he was briefly a civil servant, working in the European Fast Stream Civil Service. He studied Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Pembroke College, Oxford. His passions are politics, psychology and music. When he can, he sings in the Chapel Choir, and he takes jazz piano lessons. A keen sportsman, he has twice completed 24-hour non-stop ‘squashathons’ for charity, raising funds for children’s hospices. As a golfer he has represented and captained the Repton Halford Hewitt team. He reads avidly and widely. During term time, his partner, Carole, helps in the Development Office; during the holidays they are to be found at their home in the North York Moors, often walking Olive the dog.

Senior Deputy Head

Mrs Stevens joined The Leys School in September 2024 from The Royal Hospital School, Suffolk, where she spent eight years as Deputy Head (Academic). With thirteen years in Independent Boarding, and seven years in state education, other roles include Head of Science, and Head of Careers and PSHE. She has been a Governor of an independent primary school and is an ISI inspector. Mrs Stevens studied at the University of Birmingham before moving to Leeds to undertake teacher training. As a biology teacher she is fascinated by the natural world, and has a particular interest in human physiology. She enjoys travelling and in particular hiking in remote regions, most recently Kyrgyzstan and Svalbard. She is a keen sportswoman, and continues to play competitive netball. Her husband Gareth is a Partner at Leathes Prior, specialising in employment law. He is a governor of the ASSET Education multi-academy trust and is a keen golfer.

Paul McKeown
Paul McKeown
Bursar

Mr McKeown joined The Leys as Bursar and Clerk to The Governors in January 2003. He had previously been a teacher at Stamford School and then Trent College. At Trent College he was Head of Business Education and then took on the responsibility for Marketing and Development. Whilst there he led a project to set up and launch a new prep school for Trent College, The Elms. Whilst at The Leys, he has been a Governor at Heath Mount School for 10 years with particular responsibly for the Finance. He read Economics and Accounting at Leeds University, did a PGCE at Manchester University and an MA at Leicester University. He is married to Charmaine and they have 3 grown up sons. One of whom is married and they now have two grandchildren. Two of their sons went through the Foundation Schools starting at St Faith’s and then going through The Leys. Mr McKeown particularly enjoys playing and watching sport. He played minor county cricket and still manages to play 5-a-side football and enjoys his golf. He also loves walking and travelling with Charmaine.

Oliver Peck
Oliver Peck
Deputy Head (Academic)

Mr Peck arrived with us in September 2020, coming from Oundle School where he was Head of Science and Technology for eight years. Prior to that he held posts at Brighton College, as Head of Biology, and Ampleforth College as a teacher of Biology and Assistant Housemaster. His links to Yorkshire extend beyond this – he earnt both his Biology BSc and PGCE in Secondary Science at the University of Leeds. We expect Mr Peck to complete training with the ISI in the autumn term, and to begin as a Team Inspector from late 2024. Recently, he also spent almost two years as a governor, sitting on the Educational Sub-Committee, at the Royal Hospital School. Mr Peck is married to Lizzy, also a teacher but of Theology - they have a daughter, Alethea, who loves being at St Faith’s School. When time allows, he enjoys cooking and claims to be able to rustle up a mean New York slice and passable maki-rolls (not in a single dish we might add).

Deputy Head (Pastoral)

Mrs Hynd joined The Leys in 2017 having been a boarding housemistress, head of department and lay chaplain at Epsom College. She has worked in a variety of day and boarding schools including the RGS Guildford, Bradfield College and Latymer Upper School. Passionate about her subject she was a board member of the Independent School Religious Studies Association for a number of years. Prior to teaching Mrs Hynd worked in politics and took part in a Round the World Yacht Race. Competitive by nature she was a member of the winning crew in this race and was Daring Ladies Champion in 1997. Mrs Hynd completed a joint honours degree in Theology and Philosophy at Nottingham University, a Masters Degree in Theological Research at Durham University and a PGCE at Kings College, London. In 2006 she was awarded a Farmington Fellowship with a focus on how schools can support the individual faith of pupils.

William Davidson
William Davidson
Deputy Head (Safeguarding)

Mr Davidson joined The Leys in September 2016 as Deputy Head (Safeguarding), having previously taught French and been a housemaster, firstly at Malvern College then at Glenalmond College. He has been Chair of Governors at a federation of primary schools in Cambridge and is currently the Safeguarding Governor at Orwell Park Prep School in Suffolk. Mr Davidson is also an ISI Inspector, with a focus on safeguarding and boarding. Following a degree in Japanese from Edinburgh University, including a year studying at Seikei University in Tokyo, he worked for ten years in the world of financial media in the City, initially as a journalist before becoming a PR consultant. With three adult children, all of whom went to The Leys, he now enjoys refereeing and watching rugby, playing village cricket and motorcycling.

Geoffrey Howe

Deputy Head (Teaching and Learning)

Educated at Oxford and Cambridge University Mr Howe took up the role as Head of Mathematics at The Leys School in 1998. He was then appointed to a new SMT role in 2015, responsible to the Head for all aspects of teaching and learning in the School. Specifically, to develop the reputation of The Leys as a centre of excellence through robust and effective systems of induction, INSET, staff appraisal, continuing professional development, learning observations, digital technology, and the sharing of best practice throughout the Common Room. Married to Carol, a mathematics and chemistry teacher at The Leys, they have two children, both who attended the school. He is a keen golf and tennis player and has been known to tread the stage acting or playing music on many an occasion.

Deputy Head (Wider Curriculum)

Mr Earl joined The Leys in September 1997, having completed his PGCE at Cambridge University and taught for a year at Framlingham College prior to that. He is a Geography graduate of Loughborough University, with specialisms in Globalisation, Industrial Change and Carbon/Sustainability. In his time at The Leys he has taught Geography, been Head of Sixth Form (2000 – 2004) and Housemaster of West (2004-13) as well as been Head of Hockey (1999 – 2010), and Director of Sport (2013-16) before being appointed Deputy Head (Wider Curriculum) in 2016. Married, with three sons (two of whom are OLs), he continues to play league hockey as well as representative cricket for Cambridgeshire Over 50s, while enjoying travel and following geopolitical events alongside following the (mis)fortunes of Scunthorpe United.

Wider Curriculum

The wider curriculum is one of the main pillars of Leysian life and is an integral part of the school week for all pupils, with a significant amount of time in the afternoons and early evenings devoted to it.
