Hockey

Hockey is a major sport for both boys and girls at The Leys, which is highly valued and flourishing. Regardless of their experience, players receive regular training sessions within a team and participate in challenging fixtures against a wide range of Schools through the course of a term. The aim of the hockey programme is to provide fun, engaging development opportunities that encourage player participation at all ability levels.

The Leys Hockey Club runs twelve girls’ teams and fourteen boys’ sides from Year 7 to Sixth Form, with the girls playing in the Autumn Term and the boys in the Lent Term.

Club Links and England Hockey Performance Centre

The most talented hockey players are encouraged to balance school and club hockey through strong external links with Cambridge City Hockey Club and receive coaching from a team of experienced and well-qualified staff led by Darrel Cassidy, a former New Zealand International and England Hockey National League Coach. Regular representation of Leys pupils in England Hockey’s player pathway have led to numerous individuals going on to represent England and Great Britain at U21 and Senior levels.

Facilities

First-class facilities include two sand-based Astroturfs, a 7-a-side Astroturf and a Sports Hall suitable for Indoor Hockey, which ensures that players of all abilities get access to the highest quality training experiences.

Tour Opportunities

Touring opportunities are a significant part of The Leys Hockey Club experience with recent tours by the senior boys to South Africa (2015, 2019), and two junior girls tours to Holland (2016, 2017) proving extremely successful.

Our Success

The Leys have an enviable record in National Schools competitions with both boys and girls U16s squads reaching the National Hockey finals (boys in 2015, and 2022, girls in 2017 and 2018) and the U18 boys reaching the last 16 of the National plate in 2015, 2016 and quarter finalists in 2022. We are equally proud of the numerous players that grace University, Club and National teams having used The Leys Hockey Club as a springboard for life-long participation.
