Sports Academy

The Leys Sports Academy mission:

  • To monitor, support and nurture our top sportspersons by enhancing their individual performance, setting goals, improving their fitness and helping with time management
  • To develop links with clubs and encourage representative sport at County, Divisional and National level
  • To complement the performance of the School’s sports teams

The Sports Academy aims to provide a training and learning environment for the upper echelons of sportspeople at The Leys that goes beyond the offering of the games programme. Academy membership is through invitation and those selected are nominated by games coaches and the heads of sport as a product of their dedication and attitude to improvement.

The academy operates on a three-tiered structure:

Development Academy (Monday PM, Y9 & 10 – Junior 16:30-17:20, Y11 & 12 – Senior 17:25-18:15) sessions include all members of the Academy and alternate between athletic development and sport specific sessions with our specialist coaching team. The Development Academy is the foundation from which the other two tiers operate and is the largest group within the structure.

Performance Academy (Wednesday PM, Y11 & 12) provides additional practical and theory-based sessions across a wealth of topics such as sport psychology, nutrition, advanced and alternative training methods, goal-setting as well as performance monitoring and coaching. The Performance Academy sessions take place on a Wednesday afternoon as part of the wider-curriculum. Selection for this group is made as pupils enter the final term of year 10.

Heads of sport and the head of the academy will determine which pupils meet all criteria for selection (below):

  1. The pupil shows the ability to compete at county level or above
  2. The pupil has demonstrated their commitment to the programme during Development Academy sessions
  3. The pupil acts as a role model for other pupils

Those in year 11 will retain their position within the Performance Academy provided they continue to demonstrate their commitment to the programme. Year 12 pupils may, in some instances, be invited to the Performance Academy group at the beginning of the year.

The High-Performance group is for those who compete at a national level or represent their country at international level (age group) within their chosen sport. The members of this group will receive additional mentoring, athlete support and strength and conditioning provision.

The scheme provides support and advice for pupils and creates an atmosphere where all pupils involved can work together and achieve more. The programme aims to educate, train and inspire our pupils to pursue their athletic ambition alongside academic success.
