Community Connections

Our Lesyian community brings together a thriving network of: pupils; parents, past and present; Old Leysians; staff, past and present; donors and supporters; and other friends of The Leys. Beginning with our Methodist foundation, The Leys has a culture of service, of caring for others and, in the words of John Wesley, of doing ‘all the good you can’.

Pupils take opportunities to help and serve others in the school and local community, developing their leadership and communication skills.
Independent Schools Inspectorate Report

Along with pupil volunteering undertaken as part of both the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and the Personal Development, Service and Leadership Scheme, the Community Fund at The Leys provided the opportunity for local charities and community groups to apply for grants to support their work.

The Fund is now supporting two strategic partnerships in the community:

  1. Working with Red Balloon, Cambridge, who support pupils who have had difficulty at schools. This varies by individuals, but can include severe depression and social anxiety. What causes this state of mental trauma differs between individuals. Red Balloon provide an alternative school that enables them access to education. You can learn more on their website here.
  2. We support Cambridge Activity Grants, with Cambridge City Council, enabling them to offer grants to families so that they can engage their young children with physical activity. This can be learning to swim, play a sport or similar.

In addition to this, The Leys’ chapel fundraises for a Methodist charity each year, which in 25/26 is All We Can. Each House at The Leys also has its own charity, usually something close to their own hearts and voted for by the pupils, for which numerous fundraising activities through the year take place – from selling roses, to hot chocolate on a cold day.
