- Assistant Housemaster: Mr Patrick Miller
- Matron: Miss Zowie Higgs
West House was founded in 1878 and the current building was opened by the Queen Mother in 1961. Perhaps our greatest claim to fame is that the eponymous character in ‘Goodbye Mr Chips’ is based on a former Housemaster of West House, W.H. Balgarnie; the original novel was written by former West pupil James Hilton.
Long gone is the tag of being ‘the sporty house’. Today, West is celebrated for its diversity, academic excellence, and creativity, while still enjoying a strong sporting tradition. Here, kindness and respect thrive. Every student is valued, included, and given the opportunity to shine. From your very first day, you’ll feel comfortable and supported, thanks to our dedicated staff and welcoming peers. West is a place of fun and dedication, where friendships flourish and achievements are celebrated. It’s a safe, positive environment that inspires growth, confidence, and excellence. Simply put, West is at the heart of the school: the mighty mighty West House a family that stands together, celebrates diversity, and makes every moment count.
