MAKING A PAYROLL GIFT

You can choose to have your gift to The Leys deducted directly from your pre-tax salary. Read more about the Give As You Earn scheme on the Charities Aid Foundation website and ask your employer whether your organisation offers payroll giving.

The charity number for The Leys is 1144035. It is an exempt charity.

MAKING A GIFT OF SHARES, STOCK OR PROPERTY

You can get income tax relief if you give, or sell at less than market value, any qualifying investments to a UK charity such as The Leys. Individuals can deduct the value of the qualifying investments and any transaction costs, at the date of disposal, when calculating their total income for income tax purposes. This is in addition to Capital Gains Tax relief for gifts of assets to charity.

Companies can get Corporation Tax relief for gifts to charity for the same types of investment. This is in addition to relief from Corporation Tax on capital gains on such gifts.

The following categories of investment qualify for the relief:

  • shares and securities listed or dealt in on the UK Stock Exchange, including the Alternative Investment Market;
  • shares and securities listed or dealt in on recognised foreign stock exchanges;
  • units in an authorised unit trust (AUT);
  • shares in a UK open-ended investment company (OEIC);
  • holdings in certain foreign collective investment schemes – broadly, schemes established outside the UK equivalent to unit trusts and OEICs;
  • the whole of a beneficial interest in a qualifying interest in land and buildings.
Regular Gift

We are particularly grateful to donors who choose to make a regular gift. When a child starts their education with us, we commit to supporting them throughout their school years. By making a regular gift, you know you are helping a child as they grow up and fulfil their potential.

You can establish a regular gift by direct debit through this online form. Alternatively, please complete and return the form here (by post or electronically) or email the Development Office to support The Leys and its pupils.

Legacy Gift

LEAVING A GIFT IN YOUR WILL

Legacy gifts have helped make The Leys the wonderful school it is today, supporting bursaries, beautiful buildings, and Wider Curriculum activities. We know that family and close friends will come first when you make your will. When they have been provided for, we ask you to remember The Leys, providing opportunities for a younger generation of Leysians.

At the heart of the School lie values of decency, fairness, and service. We also wish to help pupils who reach the high academic standards of entry fulfil their academic potential regardless of their social background or financial circumstances. To preserve and grow this proud and meaningful tradition, The Leys needs to provide means-tested bursary places. This is the essence of The Leys, and a bequest to the school will ensure this continues for generations to come.

If you do include the School in your Will, please let us know. This will allow us to thank you for your support. Any information you give us will be treated in strict confidence and does represent a binding commitment. We will recognise your generosity by inviting you to membership of the 1875 Society.

WHAT TYPE OF GIFT CAN I LEAVE?

A cash sum – which may be index-linked to preserve its value over time.

A percentage – 4% to the school and 96% to loved ones. 4% of an estate of £1 million will sponsor a Royal SpringBoard pupil from a disadvantaged background for one year.

A share of the residue – once you have provided for loved ones, you can leave a share of the residue (or a share in the residue along with other named charities) to The Leys.

Deed of variation – if you are a beneficiary under a will, you may consider passing a portion of your inheritance to The Leys. There may be tax advantages for you, and you will be able to see the difference that your gift makes during your lifetime.

If you wish to discuss how your legacy can have the impact you hope at The Leys, please contact the Development Office. We will be happy to make sure your wishes are fulfilled.

HOW TO LEAVE A GIFT IN YOUR WILL

A legacy gift may be included when you first make your will, or can be subsequently included by adding a simple codicil. We recommend taking professional legal advice.

This suggested wording may be helpful: “I give to the Leys School, (Registered Charity Number 1144035), [the residue of my estate], [x% of the residue of my estate] or [the sum of £x] free of tax for the general purposes of the School. I declare that the receipt of the Bursar for the time being of the School shall be a full and sufficient discharge to my Executors.”

As The Leys is a registered charity, a bequest is free from inheritance tax. UK legislation also provides for a reduction in inheritance tax from 40% to 36% to those who leave 10% or more of their net estate to charity. This means the overall tax liability of your estate could be reduced by leaving a legacy to the school.

For those yet to make a will who wish to make a bequest to The Leys, local solicitors Hewitsons have agreed to donate part of the cost of making a will to the Bursaries fund. Please call 01223 461155 to arrange an appointment and quote ‘The Leys’.

Giving from Overseas

Donors living in the USA can make a tax-efficient gift to The Leys via the British Schools & Universities Foundation. When making a donation via BSUF, please express your recommendation that BSUF allocates your donation to The Leys. Please also email the Development Office to inform us, as otherwise we will not be notified before the end of the quarter. Your gift will be tax-efficient for you, and will not incur any transaction costs.

Donors living in the European Union who wish to make a gift can do so online or via bank transfer – see ‘Single gift’ tab above. If you wish to make a larger gift which is tax-efficient, please contact the Development Office.

Donors living in the rest of the world may make a gift online or via bank transfer – see the ‘Single gift’ tab above.

Gift Aid

If you are a UK taxpayer, you can increase the value of your gift by 25% by donating with Gift Aid. All you need to do is make a Gift Aid declaration when you make your gift, and The Leys will do the rest. You need to be sure that you have paid at least the amount of tax the School will claim back, and inform us if you stop being a UK taxpayer.

If you pay tax above the basic rate, you can claim the difference between the rate you pay and the basic rate on your donation. You can do this through your Self Assessment tax return or by asking HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to amend your tax code.

Telephone Campaign

The Leys Telephone Campaign keeps our community connections strong, updating Old Leysians, parents and friends on the life of the school and inviting them to support today’s pupil community.

Telephone campaigns usually take place at the end of the Summer term, when members of the Upper Sixth and recent leavers pick up the phones and start calling.

If you would like to have a chat with a pupil, please make sure we have your current contact details or email the Development Office.

Gift Acceptance & Fundraising Policy

Recognising your Generosity

We are extremely grateful to all our donors, and we recognise and celebrate their support through publications, special events and giving circles. Of course, donors may remain anonymous if they wish.

The names of all donors are included in the Donor List for the year of the gift. Our regular donors receive special recognition for their ongoing loyalty.

The Isard Circle recognises donors who make a gift of £1,500 or more ($1,500 or €1,500) in a financial year. Isard Circle members receive personal reports and are invited to an annual special event.

Donors who make a gift in their will are recognised through the 1875 Society. As a member, you will receive an invitation to an annual special event and an 1875 pin, be thanked in the List of Donors every year (unless you wish to remain anonymous) and receive personal reports.
