Senior Maths Challenge 2022

Earlier this term 55 pupils took part in this year’s Senior Maths Challenge. An incredible 13 of them received the coveted Gold Award, and a special mention goes to Sharon D who was the only Year 10 pupil to achieve Gold, and to Mark F for being named Best in School.

The Senior Maths Challenge is a prestigious competition run by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust and requires pupils to complete a 90-minute multiple choice challenge. The aim is to encourage mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems.

This year at The Leys, as well as the 13 pupils who were awarded the Gold award, 11 received Silver and a further 15 were awarded Bronze. Miss Prosser, Head of Maths, commented: “We were thrilled to have so many pupils take part this year in the Senior Maths Challenge and perform as well as they did. It is fantastic to have so many come away with the Gold Award, only being achieved by the top 8-9% of the entrants. This is a real achievement and well-deserved from all their hard work.

“Well done to Sharon D whose remarkable achievement comes on the back of her achieving a distinction in the Invitation Cayley Competition last year and congratulations also goes to Mark F who was named Best in School for the second Year running. He now receives the Maths Challenge Trophy and has been added to a long line of great Mathematicians who have won this in the past.”
