Ian Robert Philip

School, 1951-56

Ian died peacefully on 30 June 2024 with his wife and daughter at his side.

Ian very much enjoyed his time at The Leys, playing rugby in the 1st XV, being a sea scout and prefect, and serving as editor of The Fortnightly for two years. Following school he did his National Service in the Navy before studying Natural Sciences at Clare College, Cambridge. Journalism continued to be a major part of his student life and on graduating he moved to Aberdeen to be a journalist on the Press and Journal. He then moved to Glasgow to work on the Scottish Daily Express, during which time he met and married Jan.

When the Scottish Daily Express ceased publishing in Glasgow, Ian moved to the Glasgow Stock Exchange. When he retired from there, he started the third of his three careers and, together with Jan, spent the next 20 years welcoming cruise-ship passengers to Scotland. He loved this work and only stopped when ill health prevented him from continuing.

He was a wonderful husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather and friend. He is missed by many.

Words by Ian’s daughter, Judith Roberts
