Debating Success for Granta and Moulton

On Friday 25 March, a combined team of Granta and Moulton girls received their trophy as winners of this year’s House Debating Competition.

The finals were held on Friday 11 March which saw a hard-fought debate against a strong team from Bisseker House. The motion was ‘Rulers should not be bound by rules’ with the Granta and Moulton girls forming the proposition. The speeches tackled political, economical and personal aspects, and the teams encouraged the audience to interrogate the value of rules and asking them to consider what makes an effective ruler.

We were delighted to welcome second year Psychology student at Cambridge University, Karen Chan, to judge the debate. Karen has debated in national and international competitions and her experience enabled her to offer fantastic observations about the speeches and advice for the future.

Miss Garrett and Mr Hancock remarked on the extraordinary calibre of all speakers in what was a fiercely fought competition.

Debating will continue to run on Thursday lunchtimes at The Leys throughout the Summer Term.
