Leysians Enjoy Success at the Imperial Meeting
Two pupils from The Leys competed at the National Rifle Association’s Imperial Meeting at Bisley, siblings Joanna and George H enjoyed success at one of the most significant events in the target rifle calendar.
The Imperial Meeting, which attracts competitors from across the UK and beyond, saw Joanna and George compete in the Youth Imperial programme and the Ashburton as part of a British Young Shooters Association team, comprising of pupils from several schools. The competition demands participants maintain concentration over long days read changing wind conditions and deliver under pressure
At the event, Joanna took part in a full schedule of adult Target Rifle matches, enjoying an outstanding meeting. Named Best British Young Shooter Under 19, she also secured the best tyro (novice) award in the Tucker Aggregate with a score of 305.22, earning an NRA Gold Medal and Bronze Bar. Her strong performances saw her feature on 12 prize lists, represent both Norfolk and Cambridgeshire, and progress beyond novice status for future competitions.
George made his debut in adult competition in the opening stage of the Sovereign’s Prize. Shooting alongside much more experienced competitors, he gained valuable experience and rose to the challenge of competing at one of the sport’s most prestigious events.
In recognition of their contribution to youth shooting, both pupils were presented with British Young Shooter badges and shoulder flashes by Major General Sturrock during the Army Target Rifle Dinner, which they attended as invited guests. School Staff Instructor and OC Army Section at The Leys, Captain Paddy O’Hanlon, commented: “Competing at the Imperial Meeting is an exceptional opportunity for any young shooter, and Joanna and George embraced the challenge brilliantly. Their success reflects countless hours of hard work and determination, and their performances mark an exciting milestone for target shooting at The Leys.”
