Alfred Ian Carlstrom (Carl) Haythornthwaite
East 1950-55
My father was the second of three generations to attend The Leys, preceded by his father and followed by myself. He enjoyed his time at The Leys and was successful both academically, being offered two places at Cambridge University, and in the field of sport as a keen swimmer and expert shot with a rifle. His leadership qualities were also demonstrated when he was appointed as Senior Prefect in his final year.
He read Electrical Engineering at Cambridge, sponsored by the Royal Navy. Following further training at Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth and The Royal Naval College, Greenwich he served in the submarine service for most of his Royal Naval career. On retirement from the Royal Navy, he joined Vickers Shipbuilding & Engineering Limited in Barrow-in-Furness, where he worked as Head of Electrical Design on both submarines and surface ships.
Whilst at Cambridge, Carl met his beloved wife, Brenda. They were married in the Leys School Chapel in 1959 and celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary in 2019 (as reported in Issue 42 of OL News).
Carl touched the lives of many people throughout his career and family life, in particular, continuing the work of his father on the Haythornthwaite family tree.
He passed away peacefully at Furness General Hospital on 3 July 2022. He leaves his dear wife Brenda; sister Toinie; son Ian (East 1973-1978); daughter Gillian and grandsons John and Richard.
