Sporting tradition

Sporting tradition was upheld when The Leys and The Perse Rugby 1st XVs met for their final match of the season.

The fixture was first played on October 14, 1875, in the year of the School's foundation. In a nod to history, a couple of The Leys players ran the touchline wearing fleece-lined jackets which date back some 50 years and are kept with the School's archives.

In his programme introduction Mark Slater, Headmaster of The Leys, said: "Many of the players know each other well from their previous schools or from County or Club rugby, and the occasion is as much about friendship as it is about rivalry and competitiveness."

This season, The Leys won a good contest 16-3, in a match enjoyed by past and present Leysians and Persians, their friends and families.
