Topping fun

Leys girls gave an exuberant performance of Daisy Pulls It Off, an affectionate send-up of the boarding school stories of the 1920s.

Denise Deegan's light-hearted romp offered plenty of good parts for budding actresses. Alexandra Gray took the lead role of Daisy Meredith, the plucky scholarship girl who sees off the snobs of Grangewood School and foils a Bolshevik plot, too.

The production was set against a backdrop of patriotic red, white and blue, while the headmistress, Miss Gibson (Kirsty Dick) cut a Britannia-like figure in her Union Flag gown. With tongues firmly in their cheeks, the cast played with brio, conveying larger-than-life characters while also bringing an element of realism to Daisy's struggle against class discrimination. Although it was essentially a girls' story, boys took parts in the play and had jobs in the production crew.
