Regatta challenge for Naval CCF

“The most terrifying fun I’ve ever had!”

That was the verdict of Toms Dumpis on the National CCF Sailing Regatta, which was held at Naval HQ at Portsmouth (September 17 and 18) in rough seas and near-gale force winds.

The Leys, represented by Toms and two other Year 11 boys, Milo Mordaunt and Greg Barber, was taking part in the Regatta for the first time.

Lt Richard Hill, OC Royal Navy Section, The Leys School CCF, said: “It was terrific to see The Leys participating in this prestigious event, sailing in the shadow of huge warships alongside some of the biggest schools and best sailors in the country.”

He said Milo Mordaunt showed exceptional resilience, sailing a Laser Pico single-handed and joining another boat to continue when his mast was broken. The Leys boys successfully completed several races in double-handed Bosuns, going beyond their comfort zones and gaining valuable race experience.

The intrepid trio are keen to race more throughout the year and to make their mark in next year’s National CCF Regatta.
