Evensong at Jesus College

The Leys Chapel Choir sang Choral Evensong at Jesus College, Cambridge, and earned plaudits for their performance.

The 50-strong choir sang the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis, to the setting by Stanford, and Bainton’s anthem, And I Saw A New Heaven. They also sang the psalms and responses, with which they were not very familiar because these do not feature prominently in the regular Methodist service.

They had been invited to perform by Mark Williams, Director of Chapel Music at Jesus College. In his letter of thanks to the School, Mr Williams wrote: “I was astonished to discover that the choir did not sing Evensong regularly and that psalms and responses were new to them. They sang with confidence and a lovely sound, and it was wonderful to see the Chapel filled with youngsters who clearly enjoy singing so much.”

Mark Slater, the Headmaster, said he was “immensely proud” of the Chapel Choir.

Prof Ian White, who recently took up the post of Master of Jesus College, is the father of Old Leysian James White. James has just gone up to Sydney Sussex, Cambridge, to read Economics. His sister, another Old Leysian, has recently graduated from Trinity Hall, Cambridge
