Artist-in-residence appointed
The Leys has appointed its second artist-in-residence, Ukrainian painter Ulyana Gumeniuk.
Ulyana joins the School from Trinity College, Cambridge, where she held the post of Fellow Commoner in Creative Arts for two years. Her studio is in the main art room, an open-plan area where pupils will be able to see her at work. She will work mainly with sixth-form students, helping them to develop their personal projects.
Daughter of an artist, Ulyana was selected to study at a specialist Soviet art school at 11, so she was destined for a career in art.
“I’m fascinated by the Old Masters their traditional techniques and very high skills, and I want to encourage students to pay attention to their technique and explore the possibilities of different aspects oil painting,” she said.
Julie Stobbart, Head of Art at The Leys, said: “We are thrilled to be welcoming Ulyana to our department and are very excited to be working alongside her.”
Ulyana is pictured with her work in progress, 0/1.stage 3, an oil painting which is part of a larger three-year project.
