A head for art - and science

Edward Parkhouse, a student who has just completed his studies at The Leys, has been named as joint winner of this year’s Imagining the Brain art competition.

His winning work was a triptych called Order and Pattern which was inspired by neuro-degeneration. The competition, for 14-18 year olds, is organised by the Medical Research Council (MRC) as a way of communicating science to a diverse audience. Works by previous winners have been used at international conferences on neuroscience and to illustrate scientific articles and brochures.

Edward, who has just begun his Foundation Art studies at Cambridge Regional College (CRC), will work with the Medical Research Council at Addenbrooke’s as an artist in residence. He will incorporate the work inspired by his residency at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology into his Foundation course work.

Yvonne Vallis, co-ordinator for Imagining the Brain, said: “We are extremely excited about working with him.”

Edward’s success follows that of another Leys School pupil, Mu-Chun Chiang, in last year’s competition.
