LEYS SCHOOL BOAT CLUB - ROWING
The school boat club shares a large boathouse with three colleges in Chesterton, Cambridge on the River Cam. The School's fleet of rowing boats, oars and trailer are stored there. Showers, toilets and changing facilities are available to pupils at the boathouse. Some pupils travel to the boathouse by minibus, others cycle or run.
The boat club trains on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons during the main games sessions. Rowing takes place throughout all three school terms.
Equipment - The club has a good fleet of rowing boats and oars for its members:
- 4 eights/octuples
- 5 fours/quads
- 5 double sculls
- 15 single sculling boats
Competition - Most pupils participate in a number of races throughout the year. They compete in races on the River Cam - Cambridge Small Boats and Autumn Heads, The University Fairbairn Races and the Head of the Cam. The club travels to races in London such as the Pairs and Fours Heads of the River, the Head of the Nene in Peterborough, the National Sculling Head in Henley, Poplar Regatta in the London Docklands, the National Schools' Regatta in Nottingham, Marlow Regatta at Dorney Lake Eton, Henley Women's Regatta and Henley Royal Regatta.
Coaches. - Simon Hames is the Master in charge of Rowing. He is a former Great Britain and England Senior International. He is assisted by two members of the school teaching staff (common room) - Mr D Nye and Mr T Reed. In addition the school employs approximately five other outside coaches, most of whom are competing in rowing at senior club/international level.
Training - Pupils train on the river on Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday afternoons. Land training (circuits/weight training/running/indoor rowing machine) takes place on Monday and Wednesday during the school activities session or at other times to suit pupils.
Social - the club organises a boat club dinner and a barbecue and boatnaming as appropriate during most school years.
Parental involvement - parents, families and friends are encouraged to attend races and events to support the boat club.
