Performance Arts Overview
Extra-curricular Performing Arts at The Leys is popular and wide-ranging. Activities include dance (ballet, contemporary and tap); drama (Drama Club for Year 9/10, as well as many school productions open to all); and Theatre Crew, who support all the productions and events in the school's on-site theatre.
Performing Arts facilities are excellent at The Leys, including a theatre, dance studio, drama studio and brand-new music school. The Leys Theatre, although about to undergo significant changes through an ambitious development programme, is an excellent resource for the school, with professional lighting, sound and staging facilities, managed by our in-house technical staff.
Theatre Productions
Each year The Leys sees a diverse and exciting range of drama performed by the school, ranging from contemporary and hard-hitting works, to the more traditional Shakespeare classics, to large-scale West End Musicals.
In the Autumn term, there are usually two senior-school productions, one of which is often a musical: the other often a smaller, more experimental piece of drama. The Lent term brings the A-Level examined performances in the Drama Studio and a lower-school production in the Theatre. The Summer term is packed with another lower-school production, or sometimes a 'double-bill' featuring both Year 9 and 10, as well as the Moulton House production (Years 7 & 8) and the Summer Cabaret which ends the year with a mucic and drama revue held in the Speech Day marquee.
Recent productions at The Leys have included/will include:-
- Grease (November 2007)
- The Ash Girl (December 2007)
- Beasts and Beauties (Moulton House June 2007)
- Totally Over You & Out of Mind, Out of Sight (Year 9 & 10, May 2007)
- Guys and Dolls (November 2006)
- Shakers (November 2006)
Auditions for school productions are open to all the respective students, not just the academic drama students. Productions are an ideal opportunity to develop confidence, communications and team-working skills, alongside creative and performing skills. Productions are directed by our own staff or visiting professional directors, and supported by the student Theatre Crew alongside our professiona theatre staff.
Forthcoming productions are announced in the News section of this website. Ticket enquires should be directed to the box office
