Outdoor Education Overview

From the Head of Outdoor Education, Russell McAlinden.

I believe passionately in the value of Outdoor Education, and I am convinced that the inclusion of Outdoor Education within the School provides enormous potential benefits to our students, not to mention staff as well! The delivery of Outdoor Education is seen as a major part of student development at The Leys School, supporting the need for personal development and the encouragement of individual thinking and leadership. The notion of Outdoor Education fits perfectly within the Schools mission statement. Indeed, another valuable role of Outdoor Education is to teach young people how to assess and manage risks sensibly. Learning about risk in a controlled environment allows our students to cope with the hazards they face when they leave the parental home to make their own way in the world. The fundamental theory behind the use of Outdoor Education as a development tool is to use Outdoor and Adventurous activities as a vehicle for the development of students personal life skills.
