Tennis
Master in charge: Richard Hill
Tennis is played extensively in the Summer term as the major sport for girls and by many of the boys as an alternative to cricket, with a full fixtures programme for all players. Many pupils continue tennis through the winter months, with coaching from the local Tennis Academy, based at The Leys since September 2004. Group or individual tennis coaching is also provided by the Tennis Academy, for further details and to book extra coaching lessons please contact Head of Tennis, Richard Hill.
Facilities include three hard courts, one with floodlit lighting for evening use. In the Summer term we also have grass and astro courts with a further seven grass and four specialist tennis astro courts at our Latham Road fields (29 courts in total).
We are lucky to have many experienced tennis coaches on our teaching staff who are passionate about tennis, many of whom have played/still play competitively for university, County or Club teams.
Links with Clubs
The Leys has good links with the 4 main clubs in the City (Cambridge, Cox and Hens, Shelford and Next Generation) and we encourage pupils to play for clubs as well as the School and to train with county squads and play individual tournaments where appropriate.
The School's regular tennis fixtures include Bishop's Stortford, Felsted, Gresham's, Haileybury, Hills Road, Kimbolton, Oundle, The Perse and Stamford. We enter the National Schools Championships (Glanville and Aberdare Cups), regularly reaching the regional finals.
Camps and Trips
The Leys runs pre-season training camps in La Manga (Spain) and Windmill Hill (Sussex) and also plays in the Independent Schools Tournament at Eton. We regularly take team players to Wimbledon or Queen's Club.
