Master in Charge: Alun Roberts

The Leys School Shooting Club is coached by Alun Roberts, a former Regimental Sergeant Major recently retired from the Army after 30 years service. Mr Roberts, who is also the School Staff Instructor for the Leys Combined Cadet Force; has extensive expertise in the delivery of military training especially Skill-At-Arms and has readily adapted this knowledge to the coaching of small-bore shooting.

The School Shooting Club is affiliated to the National Small-bore Rifle Association (NRSA) and takes an active part in their annual competition programme.

The Shooting Club emphasises self discipline, safety and responsibility via the medium of small bore shooting primarily on the Schools indoor 25 yard range.

Meeting every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evening during term time the club caters for all levels of proficiency. Training for novices mostly from Yr 7 and 8 concentrates on embedding correct range procedure and the 'Marksmanship Principles'.

Continuation training for Yr 9 and 10 continues to emphasise correct procedure whilst introducing the additional skills required to shoot competitively. One session a week is dedicated to the School Shooting Team in order for them to concentrate on qualification for the annual Skill-At-Arms Meeting at Bisley.

The Clubs own rifles and shooting equipment are of the highest quality, well maintained and regularly inspected to ensure safety and accuracy. 3 new junior Anchutz Target Rifles have recently been purchased to make it far easier for Yr 7 and 8 to be taught weapon handling skills and marksmanship.
