Ceramics and Sculpture

Ceramics and Sculpture activities are run by Miss Clare Battison whose degree is in 3Dimensional design: Ceramics. Clay is a very versatile raw material and it can be modelled by sculptors to form a unique object or it can be massed produced using moulds. There is a wide range of ceramic skills and technique on offer from Year 7 through to Sixth Form. The A-Z of ceramic options is endless:

B is for Biscuit: this is the term used to describe the first clay firing and comes from the French term ‘bis-cuite’ or twice baked

T is for transfer printing: a linear design is printed onto specialist paper with a thin coating of ‘glue’ over the top. Once dry this can be transferred onto the surface of a glazed pot.

Students who opt to do ceramics as part of their GCSE or A Level and will use the pottery room for furthering their studies. Other pupils take part in Art clubs as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award and our activities enable pupils to learn new skills as part of their award. Beginners come along to develop their creative thinking. New skills are learnt through projects involved in coiling, sculpting and slab building pots; and decorating and glazing mass produced vases. Sculpture beyond clay can include projects working with willow.
