English
The English Department offers a lively approach to the subject to engender a love of reading, as well as providing pupils with the ability to communicate verbally and on paper with verve and accuracy. The Department is housed in recently refurbished accommodation containing state-of-the-art technology and a generous library of fictional and critical works. The curriculum is supplemented by reading and creative writing evenings, literary societies, the annual Stratford trip and outside speakers (including the novelists Jonathan Coe and Louis de Bernieres, as well as Shakespearean scholar Stanley Wells).
Years 7-11
Pupils study fiction, non-fiction, prose, drama, poetry, personal writing and grammar. The highlight of these years is the Arras Trip (Year 9). In Years 10 - 11 pupils work towards two separate GCSEs in English and Literature.
Sixth Form
We offer OCR English Literature at AS and A2 level. Students study a whole variety of literature from all genres and eras. There is coursework in both years while departmental extra curricular activities add significantly to the Sixth Form English experience.
