Chemistry

Chemistry is a subject that is fun for pupils and teachers alike, with exam success enjoyed by both. Pupils learn to enjoy using Chemistry and to tackle applications with confidence and a sense of achievement.

Pupils develop an understanding of Chemistry principles and facts, their significance and an ability to communicate what they know and understand. They also develop safe, practical skills in the use of Chemistry and learn to apply these to the solving of relevant and worthwhile problems, through imaginative and creative scientific thinking, group work and co-operation. Pupils understand the capabilities and limitations of Chemistry and the economic and social implications and consequences of its use.

Through our work we emphasise the inter-relationship with the other sciences and the important role of Chemistry as the core science, thus preparing pupils for the 21st century where totally new models of lifestyles will exist.

GCSE

As part of the AQA Chemistry 4421 syllabus, there is a requirement to complete a Centre-Assessed Unit. This will consist of a series of tasks carried out in normal lessons but under controlled conditions which require the collection and analysis of data. These tasks are externally-set but marked by the teacher.

In addition, each candidate will be assessed throughout the course on the implementation of practical work.

AS Level Chemistry

The syllabus followed is Edexcel 8080. Exams in units 1 and 2 are taken in June, together with unit 3B which is based on laboratory chemistry. In addition, practical skills are assessed on a number of occasions throughout the course, using exercises which are internally marked.

A2 Level Chemistry

Two units are taught during the year. Unit 4 is examined in January and Unit 5 in June, together with Unit 6 which is a synoptic paper. Practical skills are assessed as at AS Level.
