Biology
Biology is a particularly popular science at The Leys and a fun, imaginative, yet hard working approach is adopted by staff and students alike. We have an excellent track record with both GCSE and A-level exam results (in 2006, 81% of both our AS and A2 cohorts achieved an A or B grade). We annually have approximately 20% of our A-level biologists moving onto related 'Oxbridge' medical & biological/natural science courses. Our students in the past have gone on to choose paths in Natural Sciences, the Biomedical Sciences (Anatomy, Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Physiology), Genetics, Psychology and a plethora of specialist courses such as Microbiology, Environmental Sciences and Marine Biology.
GCSE
Following the recent government-led changes to the teaching of Key Stage 4 Science we have chosen to follow the new 2007 AQA Specification. We are looking forward to using this new framework to stimulate the students as well as prepare them for their GCSE examinations in Year 11. Pupils will be examined with three 45 minutes papers in their final year, each contributing 25% to the assessment. The remaining 25% is centre-assessed and include testing 'everyday' practical skills as well as more significant 'Investigative Assignment'.
AS/A2
The Leys Biology Department follows the Edexcel specification at AS/A2 level. Various topics are studied over the two years ranging from 'Cell & Molecular biology' and 'Ecology' to 'Human Health & Disease' and 'Genetic Engineering'. Coursework is split between laboratory-based and ecological investigations with the latter being carried out in Brancaster, Norfolk. We also have close links with the Babraham Institute where students have an opportunity to have hands-on experience in an active research establishment. Extra-curricular trips led by teachers from the biology department include an adventure expedition to Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Here, the wonders of the Okavango Delta, Magkadikadi salt pans, Victoria Falls, Chobe river and Antelope Park (lion breeding centre) are experienced by intrepid explorers from the Sixth Form. Plans are currently being made to incorporate Namibia in future visits.
