The Boathouse (£250,000)
Total funds raised to date - £165,000
Our boathouse is located by Logans’ Meadow nature reserve on the north bank of the Cam and unexpectedly in 2013 we were allowed a long-term lease on the site so, in conjunction with Churchill, King’s and Selwyn Colleges, with whom we share our boathouse, it was agreed that the site should be redeveloped. Work on a new boathouse will take place during 2015/16 and will offer greatly improved facilities including a fitness room and workspace for repairs. The lease that has been negotiated will help to secure the future of rowing at The Leys.
The timing of this opportunity was awkward and inopportune following so soon after the Great Hall campaign when we have been ubiquitous in asking for support from the majority of The Leys community, however, whilst being very sensitive about this, the governors were equally keen to not miss out on an opportunity to progress our rowing offering on the Cam which is becoming an increasingly popular sport at the School today.
With the construction of the new boathouse we would like to achieve the following objectives:
- Help maintain the popularity of the Boat Club and lay the foundation for a new cycle of success for the years to come.
- Build a safe and pleasant environment for the new generation of Leysians, offering them facilities to compete at the same level as their peers in other comparable schools.
- Attract applicants to The Leys with an interest in rowing to enhance our performance in regattas and head of the river races.
How can you help?
Many hundreds of OLs have passed through the Boat Club, some only rowed for a term, some never stopped. Whatever your level of involvement, we hope that OL 'boaties' will contribute something to this much needed boathouse.
