The Leys

For many, there is no exact right time to write a Will and you may or may not have already written your own.

We appreciate that the interests and well-being of relatives and close friends will naturally come first when you are making your Will. It is when they have been provided for that we ask you to remember The Leys, alongside other causes important to you. We hope that you will find the information on this page useful.

For those who recognise the value of their own time at The Leys, a Legacy is a way of providing opportunities for the next generation of Leysians and ensuring that the School remains one of the country’s leading independent schools.

The School is committed to continual investment in facilities and resources to enrich and enhance exceptional teaching and deliver an outstanding 21st century education. Central to the character and ethos of the School is the belief that pupils who reach the academically high-standards of entry should have access to this education regardless of their social background or family financial circumstances. To preserve this proud tradition The Leys needs to provide means-tested bursary places. This is the essence of The Leys and a bequest School will ensure this continues for many generations to come and help with our long term financial planning.

Fee income provides for the day to day running of the School. Beyond this The Leys continues to and needs to benefit from the generosity of a committed network of alumni, current and former parents and staff and friends.

How to leave a gift in your will

Leaving a gift in your will to The Leys is straight forward and tax efficient. As a registered charity, a bequest to The Leys is free of Inheritance Tax. This is strengthened by UK legislation introduced in 2012 which allows for a reduction in the inheritance tax (from 40% to 36%) to those who leave 10% or more of their net estate to charity. Thus the overall tax liability of your estate could be reduced by leaving a legacy to The Leys. There are different types of bequests which can make a real difference to the future of the School.

The 1875 Society

You may wish to support The Leys because you feel that it was part of your passport to success in life and you want to give something back, or you want to help students deal with unexpected hardship, to ensure that no-one is denied opportunity for financial reasons, or you may choose to do so simply because you love the place. Whatever your reasons, the School will be delighted if you make a provision for The Leys in your will.

If you do include the School in your Will, please let us know. This will help us to plan for the future and enable us to thank you for your support. Any information you give us will be treated in strict confidence and does not involve you in any binding commitment. We will recognise your generosity by inviting you to membership of the 1875 Society. The Society is exclusively for legacy donors, who receive an annual invitation from the Headmaster to attend a special garden party. Members are also listed in the Annual List of Donors unless they prefer to remain anonymous.

All sizes of legacy are vital to the School's future. We very much hope that you will wish to support the School in this way and to become a member of this exclusive and very special donors' society.

If you would like to discuss leaving a legacy to the School, please contact Thomas Northcote, Head of Development, by email or telephone (01223 508927).

Please consult a solicitor before making or changing your will.
